Career change

Old state

An engineer with a learning mindset who had achieved Chartered status within their discipline following a sustained period of personal and professional development.

Following a one to one conversation with their line manager the individual expressed the desire to explore a wider set of career options and expected that would result in a move away from their current profession.

What the individual did to change their state

The first step was the conversation with the line manager.  They trusted the line manager to approach the predicament with an open mind.

The individual worked with a coach to explore their underlying career motivations and help assess their learning agility.

Having identified a number of people in their network the individual spent time visiting and speaking with a range of professional people.

After a period of reflection, the individual built a clear plan around an exciting career goal.  They then socialised the plan with key supporters which created an internal lateral move into a corporate affairs role.

The initial move was successful. The research the individual had undertaken, prepared them for the transition.  Increased self-awareness meant they could anticipate aspects of the move they would find difficult and who they could turn to for support.

Two years on and the individual has made a vertical move within the same organisation and function.  They report having closer alignment with their career motivations and have begin to re-evaluate their career aspirations and plan.
