Building emotional intelligence

Old state

An experienced learning and development professional was derailing in and outside of work, demonstrating unhelpful behaviours and experiencing decreased levels of motivation.

The individual had been a high performer working in an organisation they were committed to for over 7 years.  They were unsure what their future career and life aspirations were.  They had recently finished a long-term relationship after 12 years.

What the individual did to change their state

The individual had some awareness of how they felt, the impact of some of their unhelpful behaviours and the need to change.  The individual did admit to feeling trapped, scared about the consequences of taking action in their life

The individual used the Emotional Intelligence Profile to gain vital insight into aspects of their attitude and awareness and how these impacted their behaviour.  By seeking feedback from colleagues and using reflection techniques the individual was able to accept and work with the data.

Working with a coach the individual was motivated to address levels of self-regard and regard for others and notice how the changes in their physiology and emotional states impacted their behaviour.  Alongside this action the individual became really motivated to create future career and life goals.

New state

The individual left the organisation they were currently working in to head up an in-house L&D function.  This took them closer to their career goal creating a new feeling of control and momentum that they had been previously lacking.

The individual formed news habits of thinking.  In particular allowing positive feedback in and managing how they reflected on their experiences.

They moved house and struck up new relationships in-side and outside of work.  During these experiences the individual worked harder to become more aware of themselves and others.

A four-year follow-up of their Emotional Intelligence Profile reinforced what the individual now feels about themselves.
